Lot 897		Apollo 11: Flown Thermal Mylar Film Coating, "Kapton Foil," A Rare, Large Segment. COA and Provenance Included. From Apollo 11, recovered from the first Moon Landing a very large "Kapton" foil segment (officially GT-131 Thermal Control Coating Laminate) from the Apollo 11 Command Module, "Columbia" which in 1969 carried Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to the moon. The mylar film coating provided thermal protection for the Command Module. Once returned to Earth, thermal coating was removed from the spacecraft and very often used for presentation purposes usually entombed in lucite. A very large segment measuring 4 x 8¼" with heat stress and buckling clearly apparent. Comes with exceptional provenance and COA. Goldberg Auctions has offered segments over the years, each auction having increasingly limited pieces to offer. A large segment this size is becoming exceedingly rare from the Apollo 11 Mission. Lot 898		Apollo 11: Three Individually Signed Photos, Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins Each With LOA from Zarelli Space Authentication. Apollo 11, the flight that first landed humans on the moon. Three individually signed color photographs by all three crew, each their second and last space flights. 1.) Commander Neil Armstrong, "First Man" scarce image of wearing blue suit and tie has signed with a blue Sharpie. It is blue on blue but his signature is large and legible even at some distance. LOA from Zarelli. 2.) Lunar Module Pilot, Buzz Armstrong, second Moonwalker, has signed a NASA color litho photo reprinted for the 10th anniversary of him standing next to the US flag. In the light gray of the lunar surface Buzz has inscribed and signed "To Adam Best Wishes, Buzz Aldrin" in black ball point pen. Again there is contrast, and signature is quite legible as Buzz really pressed down firmly on the photo. LOA from Zarelli. 3.) Pilot Michael Collins has signed his NASA white spacesuit portrait "Best Wishes to Mike from Mike Collins". LOA from Zarelli. All three photos in excellent condition. Lot 899		Apollo 11 Unusual, Signed Splashdown Diagrams: Neil Armstrong Has Signed Two (2) Splashdown Diagrams, Michael Collins Signed Primary Landing Area. Apollo 11, the flight that first landed humans on the moon. On July 24th, 1969 after the crew's successful mission, The Command Module Columbia, landed in the Pacific Ocean. Offered are three printed diagrams with notations that explain the logistics each signed. 1. Neil Armstrong has signed a day of splashdown diagram that ran in a Chicago newspaper that shows the stages of reentry and splashdown anticipating 950 nautical miles from Hawaii. It actually landed 800 miles Southwest of Hawaii and only 12 miles from the recovery ship. Neil Armstrong has signed above the area representing Hawaii. Certified authentic by Zarelli Space Authentication. Newspaper illustration is 10 x 8" with Armstrong signing in his usual blue Sharpie and the two printed/illustrated Landing Area and Splashdown cards are 3 x 5 with Armstrong inscribing "To Sandra Neil Armstrong" in black fine point fiber pen and Michael Collins signing on his card in the same pen. Lot 900		Apollo 11: Crew Signed Photo, Half Showing Armstrong and Aldrin on the Moon with Half of Recovery Crew Photo Including All Three Astronauts. Outstanding Apollo 11 crew signed 8 x 10" color photo having two images. The top portion shows an image of both Armstrong and Aldrin installing the US flag, the lower half an image of the recovery with all three crewmembers in the life raft, Lt. Clancey Hatleberg closing the hatch. All three have signed using different pens; Neil Armstrong a blue fine point pen, Buzz Aldrin a black fine point pen, and Michael Collins blue fiber point pen all clearly visible in the lunar surface area of photo. He was the first person to view every photograph from the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and the first 23 space shuttle missions. He also provided technical training to every astronaut who went into space in the 20th Century. The first of two lots with a pair of these Apollo 11 commemorative flown history. Years ago, Dick Underwood prepared these "A Small Part of History" for friends and co-workers. He clipped small segments of flown film to the moon with each step of the journey mentioned in the COA that he has boldly signed. Also an LOA form the Underwood Family is included. Lot 903		Apollo 11: Neil Armstrong Signed Splash Down and Mobile Quarantine Facility Diagram + 3 Covers: Launch, Landing & Recovery W/Date Cancels. Apollo 11, the flight that first landed humans on the moon. Unusual steps were taken upon their return which was the quarantine of the crew along with Flight Surgeon William Carpentier and Mechanical Engineer, John Hirasaki who handled the lunar rocks brought back by Apollo 11. Basically a modified Air Stream, the unit was already aboard the USS Hornet and then flown to Houston to assuage fears of some lunar contagion. These steps are laid out in six panels printed on a a 7 x 6¼" sheet. Neil Armstrong has signed in green fine point pen and it is exceptionally clean and bold. LOA by Steve Zarelli Space Authentication. A terrific Neil Armstrong signed piece that is not only unusual but presents beautifully. Diagram has been paired with an An Apollo 11 Launch Cover, An Apollo 11 First Step on the Moon cover and a Recovery cover each with "Day Of" postal cancels July 16, 1969, July 20th, 1969 and July 24, 1969, all postmarked from Patrick Air Force Base, FL. Lot 904		Apollo 11: Crew Signed Post Card of Apollo 11 Plaque Left on the Moon with LOA with a Stainless Steel on Marble Replica Paper Weight. Apollo 11 astronauts left behind on the moon a plaque made of stainless steel measuring nine by seven and five-eighths inches, and one-sixteenth inch thick. The plaque was attached to the ladder on the landing gear strut on the descent stage of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module. During flight, the plaque was covered with a thin sheet of stainless steel that was removed on the lunar surface. Offered is a postcard (3¼ x 6") of this historic piece printed on silver card stock and signed clearly and cleanly by Neil Armstrong, Mike Collins, and Buzz Aldrin with LOA by Steve Zarelli. Also included is a stainless steel and marble replica paperweight of the plaque, 3 x 4 x ¾". Great little commemorative with surface having minor scratches. Eleven men who have walked on the moon are represented in this fine collection of nine (9) signed color portraits and one (1) signed cover. 1.) Apollo11 unusual item, a self-addressed Apollo 16 commemorative cover postmarked on the launch date April 16,1972 from Kennedy Space Center. 2.) Apollo 12 Charles Conrad portrait standing in white spacesuit signed. 3.) Apollo 12 Superb Alan Bean portrait getting dressed in white spacesuit. 4.) Apollo 14 portrait of Alan Shepard in white spacesuit inscribed to another Alan. 5.) Apollo 14 portrait of Ed Mitchell signing across chest of white spacesuit 6.) Apollo 15 signed portrait of Dave Scott standing in white spacesuit. 7.) Apollo 16 fine John Young signed portrait inscribed surrounded by models representing his very long career at NASA in blue NASA coveralls. 8.) He also provided technical training to every astronaut who went into space in the 20th Century. One of the best signed and inscribed photos by Buzz Aldrin, the second Moonwalker, made even more appealing is that it was addressed to Dick Underwood "With Best Wishes And Thanks For Your Part In Helping To Record It All". Lot 907		Fine Apollo 11 Artifacts: Flown Kapton Foil Segment in Striking Lucite Presentation, Three Segments Mounted on LOA & First Day Issue Stamps. Fine collection of Apollo 11 artifacts/collectibles. 1.) Entombed in lucite (#26 limited to only 50 made) a triangle shaped paperweight that stands on end with a dime-sized segment of Kapton foil removed from heat shield certified by Ken Havekotte. Also entombed below flown sample is a replica of the Robbins coin carried originally by the Apollo 11 crew in silver plate commemorating the 50th Anniversary. The original packaging of the Robbins coin conveys with paperweight as it came with an Apollo 11 embroidered cloth patch and information. A very handsome desktop commemorative. 2.) Three tiny segments of flown Kapton foil mounted on a beautiful LOA certified authentic by Ken Havekotte with an explanation of the provenance of the foil pieces. 3.) First Day Issue of Man on the Moon Stamp Sept. 9, 1969 postmarked Cape Canaveral and another postmarked July 20, 1969 Cape Canaveral then with stamp for 50th Anniversary Moon Landing and very large postmark at Cape Canaveral. Lot 908		Apollo 11: 58 Select 70mm Glass Slides From Dick Underwood's Collection Specific to the First Moon Landing (1927-2011) Richard "Dick" Underwood was chief engineer on the production of the first topographic maps of the moon. He was the first person to view every photograph from the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and the first 23 space shuttle missions. He also provided technical training to every astronaut who went into space in the twentieth century. While the collections offered of Dick Underwood's glass slides in auction contain images from the entire history of his time at NASA including Apollo 11, however this collection was set aside specific to the first moon landing for some purpose. There are 58 glass slides, one a visual explaining the mission's objective to splashdown recovery. Spectacular images of the LM on its way to the surface of the moon, 28 slides of the lunar surface, tests on the moon, four wonderful views of Earth and even a few of the crew including a great image of Buzz Aldrin. Lot 909		Apollo 11 Artifacts: Two Annotated Launch Countdown Manual Pages Used by Norm Carlson plus Kapton Foil Removed From LM-5. Two unusual (non-flown) Apollo 11 artifacts. 1.) Two pages from the Launch Vehicle (LV) and Checkout Procedures one dated June 20, 1969, the other June 20, 1969 which was only 2 days and 11 hours prior to launch. Norm Carlson was the lead LV test conductor (call sign CLTC as indicated on the documents) during the final phase of the countdown and launch. Both sheets each come with a very informative Letter of Authenticity prepared and signed by Ken Havekotte. Further he assembled additional pages of information for this auction. 2.) From Lee Brandt, Lead Technician of Propulsion and Environmental controls for Grumman's Lunar Module support team at Kennedy Space Center, three segments of Kapton foil that were removed prior to launch (but already stowed inside the Spacecraft Lunar Module Adapter) to make an unexpected repair. In the LOA that accompanies the segments, Brandt explains he saved the sheets for posterity knowing at the time their historical significance. Lot 911		Apollo 11: Original Kapton Foil, 5 Small Segments in Specimen Mount on COA plus a 70mm Transparency of Aldrin Stepping Onto The Moon. Apollo 11: Two excellent presentation pieces. 1.) Flown Kapton polymide foil which provided thermal protection for the Command Module Columbia, five small segments in a round specimen mount and secured onto an excellent COA that is most informative and having a fantastic image of the module being hoisted onto the recovery ship showing the torched foil. 2.) An original 70mm transparency mounted into a free standing counter display that doubles as the COA, the image of Buzz Aldrin taken by Neil Armstrong exiting the Lunar Module. Lot 912		John Papp: General Electric Photographic Technician at Center for Research and Development. Two Full Notebooks With Photos, Negatives of Apollo. While at GE, John Papp worked as a photographer for GE Works News and as a photographic technician at GE�s Center for Research and Development in Niskayuna. Papp worked for General Electric from 1952 until his retirement in 1988. Two crammed notebooks from what evidently was file box after file box of historical photographs that now much is archived at the Grems-Doolittle Library, Schenectady Historical Society in Schenectady, NY. The archive related to early glass slide photos of the area and Lake Erie which he collected and preserved. But through his work at GE as their lead photo technician, he was involved with NASA regarding photos and lunar sample studies. Notebook #1: There are at least 18 B&W 8 x 10s of various images of lunar samples being tested, electron microscopy, core samples with top metal casing remove, two color photos of super enlarged crystal formations and more. Most of the photos have stamped on verso an inventory code and " G.E. Research & Dev. Ctr. Schenectady, NY. Also a thick publication issued by GE's R&D Division, the cover on Moon Rocks but also has other developments made in the year 1969. The balance is Zeiss Lens information, solar eclipse photos, and some Apollo information brochures. Notebook #2 has 10 B&W photos from the first landing, all stamped July 20 1969 on verso, of heavily static images from the initial broadcast of the landing and somewhat eerie. Also are there are 12+ packs of 70mm color negatives all labeled. Two packages focused on the historic images of boots on the moon. Further several 8 x 10" photos also of boots (or a portion of the boot) photographed in a studio then superimposed over a photo of the moon as if an advertisement Clearly G.E. had something to with them. Also 12+ photos from negatives of the moon and lunar surface. All in excellent condition. An interesting lot which we recommend viewing in person to appreciate. Lot 914		Neil Armstrong and Janet Armstrong Signed Affidavit and Photo. Neil Armstrong (1930-2012), naval aviator, test pilot, university professor and the first man to walk the moon on July 21st, 1969. Offered is a signature of Armstrong as "N. A. Armstrong" clipped from a tax related affidavit and co-signed underneath by his first wife Janet, who later divorced in 1994 after 38 years of marriage. This piece was discussed in the comments section in January 2011 on CollectSpace.com and comes slabbed from Beckett Grading Services and JSA certification. Lot 915		Five Study Guides From Grumman For Lunar Module Training (1967-1969) and the Scarce July 6, 1969, 250 Page NASA Apollo 11 Press Kit. Outstanding lot of 1960s publications centered on the Apollo 11 moon landing. 1.) A very clean example of the phenomenal July 6, 1969 full, 250 page Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Mission Press Kit covering every aspect of the flight. This kit educated the American press in delivering the most accurate information during the course of the historic flight. As fascination today as it was in 1969. 2.) Five "Study Guides" from Grumman for Training Purposes overall dealing with Environmental Control Subsystems all the property of the the engineer who was employed there during the Apollo Missions. Fascinating reading, many with illustrations and schematics. What remains remarkable in perusing these guides is the astonishing technical feat in getting men on the moon, most especially the LM.
